Fotolia_66991023_XSDo you remember the days of app-free lives? It's all very hazy, isn't it? Smart gadget applications have made everything simpler, and home remodeling in Chicago isn't immune.

Whether you're choosing to update your 70s-inspired bathrooms or are ready for a complete kitchen remodel, there's an app that will help you do it better.

5 Apps to Help You Plan a Chicago Home Remodeling Project

Here is a list of 5 apps you can upload to a phone or tablet to help organize ideas and inspirations for an upcoming home remodel. In addition to keeping yourself organized, the information you store will help your design team create a kitchen or bathroom space that matches your vision.

  1. Houzz Free iPad/iPhone App. Houzz.com is probably the most popular of all the websites dedicated to home design. It is straightforward in its presentation and function, and users are rarely interrupted by irritating advertisements. You can use their free Houzz.com iPad/iPhone App to quickly access the website as well as to add and store favorite pictures, tips and ideas in a personalized idea book.

  2. Benjamin Moore Color Capture. Holy moly, this app is hard to stop using. Using the Benjamin Moore Color Capture App, all you have to do is take a picture of a color you like and the app will instantly match it for you. In addition to the capture and match feature, you can play around with different color combinations and groupings, peruse paint sample cards from Benjamin Moore's vast selection or access their full spectrum color wheel for more difficult-to-find colors. Of course, you can also save all of these things in files for easy access when you need them.

  3. Snap Shop Showroom. Appreciating a new sofa, dining room table set or kitchen island in a showroom or online is one thing; knowing how it will look when it's a reality in your living space is another. With Snap Shop Showroom, you can save photos of potential furniture, furnishings and fixtures using the app. Then, you can use your phone or gadget's camera lens to view the room with the relevant object in the viewfinder so you can see how it looks. Pretty amazing, eh?

  4. The Sun Seeker. The lighting plan is instrumental to any interior design. Ideally, every room in the home would have ample natural light and a well-designed lighting plan with appropriate fixtures for after the sun sets. Plus, we all know that colors and dimensions change in response to sunlight versus artificial light. The Sun Seeker App will help you determine how sunlight in a given space will change according to the time of day and/or season.

  5. ID Wood App for iPad/iPhone. Having a hard time determining which type of wood will be best for your finishes, lifestyle and/or ethics? The I.D. Wood for iPads and iPhones serves as an encyclopedia-like reference for more than 160 different woods species.
