Reasons Why a Kitchen Remodel Might Take Longer Than Planned

Ron Nanberg | Mon, Jan 16, 2017 | Kitchen Remodeling

Chicago Kitchen RemodelThe folks at Houzz performed a 2016 survey and 70,000 of the respondents had completed a full kitchen remodel that year. From the data reported, we learn that the average time it takes to remodel a kitchen - including the planning phase - is about five months, with construction comprising about 10 weeks or so.

That's a lot of time to have your kitchen out of commission and/or out of sorts. That, alone, can be stressful, especially when your remodel goes from typical to atypical, taking longer than originally anticipated.

Sometimes a Chicago Kitchen Remodel Takes Longer Than Expected

If you're planning a major kitchen remodel, we recommend reading, Preparing for a Chicago Kitchen Remodeling Project, to learn about what you can do to facilitate a more fluid remodeling experience. Even so, "stuff" happens - and sometimes remodels take longer than expected despite your - and your remodeler's - most valiant efforts.

Here are some most likely situations that bump a kitchen remodel finish date further out in the calendar.

Hidden or unknown issues

While this is less common in new homes, older homes can be full of internal surprises that we simply can't predict. Once we tear the walls open, we may find issues that have to be resolved before the project continues. This includes things like:

  • Structural, plumbing or electrical work that wasn't done to code
  • Evidence of leaks or electrical wiring issues
  • Mold
  • Rotted wood
  • Load bearing supports that can't be removed as planned

Any or all of these will set your project back a bit because they must be addressed before the demo/remodel can continue.

Delays with permitting

It's nice to think that you call all the shots with your own remodel. In fact, it's your local building department who has the ultimate say in what you can and can't do. In case you're thinking about bypassing that route, think again. Failing to secure the proper permits and inspection sign-offs can result in penalties and fines and/or difficulty selling your home down the road at worst.

Usually, permitting and inspections move through the system relatively smoothly, but not always. Any delays or issues that hang things up in the building department will delay construction.

Changes to the original plan or scope of work

The first two items are out of your control; this item, however, is entirely within your control. The more you change your mind mid-stream, the longer the job will take - and the more it will cost as well. This is why we recommend being as prepared and sure of things as possible before you give the go-ahead on the construction phase.

Backorders cause delays

Finally, backordered items can take a toll on even the most well-planned remodel. In some cases, we can work around things until the part comes in. Other times, the lack of one item makes it impossible to install another - and the waiting game commences.

Work with Kitchens & Baths Unlimited and we assure you your Chicago kitchen remodel will move forward as efficiently as possible.
