5 Warning Signs to Help You Avoid Unscrupulous Chicago Home Remodelers

Ron Nanberg | Mon, Dec 1, 2014 |

FiveNot all Chicago home remodelers are created equal. Some are true artists and craftsmen, working meticulously to serve their clients needs and build a finished design that is made to last. Others are much more interested in the bottom line and will cut corners and hire lesser-qualified subcontractors to get the work done quick and easy, while maximizing profits.

Unless you are in the contracting business yourself, it's not always easy to determine which companies fall into the "Scrupulous" and "Unscrupulous" categories. If you're getting ready to decide between Chicago home remodelers to begin your next home remodeling project, take the time to get to know your options by asking the right questions and look out for 5 warning signs that indicate the company or individual in question isn't as scrupulous as you would want.

Don't Hire a Chicago Home Remodeler Who Demonstrates These 5 Warning Signs

  1. They are vague about the work/specifications. A true professional will be able to present you with a finished set of plans that includes an outline of exactly what will be one and a detailed construction timeline. These things may shift a bit, depending on what they find along the way (surprises can and do happen), but you should always be notified immediately and details should be explained to you.

  2. They push to get a contract signed. A contract, by nature, is a binding legal agreement. Therefore, all parties involved should feel that the contract is complete and should be 100% satisfied with its contents before signing on the dotted line. If things are left out, extras have been added without your approval or you're feeling pushed to sign a contract before you're ready, steer clear and work with a company who waits for you to give the green light.

  3. The price is too good to be true. Always be wary of any bid that comes in significantly lower than the rest. This is not a good sign. Everyone wants a good deal but high-quality materials and craftsmanship are an investment. A too-good-to-be-true bid usually is, and you will make up the difference - and then some - repairing shoddy workmanship, having to start over on a job that's left half-done or re-doing the entire remodel.

  4. Insufficient allowances in the budget. You will be given a budget, including "allowances" for each area of your remodel, i.e. countertops, cabinets, flooring, plumbing fixtures, etc. Pay attention to these. So, for example, if your granite countertop allowance or cabinet allowance doesn't look anywhere near the average market prices for those items, you're dealing with an unprofessional installer.

  5. No references or work portfolio to show you. Yes, marketing is important but top-quality contractors get the bulk of their business from word-of-mouth; their work speaks for them. Checking references and reviewing portfolios is an integral part of selecting a Chicago home remodeler whom you can trust. You always want to talk to references who have had similar work performed and meticulously pour over a remodeler's portfolio before making a final decision.
