Home remodeling in Chicago can be a fun adventure but it can also be stressful if you’re not properly prepared. Here are 10 simple things to remember.

  1. 10 Home Remodeling TipsKnow what you want – It’s extremely important that you lay out a plan of action with a specific goal in mind. Meeting with a professional kitchen and bath designer can ensure your plans are feasible. This should be done before contacting a contractor.

  2. Budget, Budget, Budget – Having a realistic idea of what you’re financially capable of will protect you from making any commitments you regret. Do the best you can to stay within your original budget.  It is also helpful to share your budget with your kitchen or bath designer so they can help keep your selections aligned.

  3. Don’t compromise quality – Never buy cheap supplies for any Chicago home remodeling project. Though it may seem like a good thing at the time, paying a little more now to save you a headache later is the better idea.  Do it right once!

  4. Talk to your family – The people most affected by this decision are your family members. Once you have an idea of who will be in the house and when, have a family meeting to discuss how you will adjust to changing conditions.   When is the ideal time for a home renovation project?

  5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – This isn’t the time to let your pride get in the way. If you have a question for a contractor, designer, or architect, don’t delay. Communication is key as there are too many details to make assumptions.

  6. Hire experienced contractors – Make sure to ask for proof of insurance and lien waivers. Don’t try to save money by skipping and hiring a painter to do your electrical.  It’s best to hire a “seasoned” contractor.  A contractor with a long track record of which you can call referrals and see the finished product.  Do the necessary due diligence.   You get what you pay for.

  7. Expect mistakes – Though you’d prefer that it not happen, contractors are human beings often working in dangerous conditions. This environment can sometimes lead to a cracked tile, a broken window, or new plumbing issue. There can be unforeseen issues that may arise in any renovation or home remodeling project.  Just take a deep breath and remember there’s always a solution.

  8. Keep invoices and receipts – Keep contracts, copies of receipts, and even consider communicating often in writing (email), just in case a conflict or misunderstanding arises.

  9. Trust the workers – Though it might be hard after reading number 8, it’s important that you trust the workers to do their jobs. Supervising or micromanaging the workers will often lead to unnecessary hard feelings, or a too-many-cooks scenario.  How do you perform when your boss is standing over your shoulder all day?

  10. Know the cost - Prices can often fluctuate during a home remodel for a variety of reasons. Make sure you know what you're paying for. What is or is not included?
