Bathroom Renovation: Making Small Bathrooms Look Bigger

Bathroom RenovationRemodeling your small bathroom is not going to make it any bigger physically. However, there are a number of tricks you can pull in your small bathroom to make it look and feel more spacious. For the latest information in bathroom renovation, consider the following suggestions.

Basic elements of a bathroom

Every bathroom has to include a sink and faucet, bathtub or shower, and a toilet, regardless of how much space is in the actual bathroom. As a result, small bathrooms can feel cramped and difficult to navigate.

Color and tone

If your bathroom has a lot of variation in color, you may find that the space feels smaller. Your bathroom renovation project should keep most of the components of your bathroom space the same tone or value. Having dark tile and light walls – or the other way around – can visually segment the space and make it seem much smaller. If, however, you do want a little bit of contrast, it can work to your advantage to make one feature, such as a cabinet that is low to the ground, drastically different in order to keep all the aspects of the bathroom from blending together.

Not only should your floor and walls be similarly colored, but your bathroom renovation project should also make sure that your ceiling reflects the rest of the space. This will open up the space and make it feel more expansive, especially if your ceiling has some dips or angles.

Glass and mirrors

Visual barriers can also chop up the space and make it feel smaller. As such, glass barriers for your shower will make it feel less compartmentalized. Textured glass loses this effect, however, so consider clear glass for your shower.

Nothing makes a small space feel bigger than a large mirror that reflects the entire room. For your bathroom renovation, think even bigger: consider a mirror that spans the entire length of one wall, or even all the way up to the ceiling, to double the feel of the space. Mirrors also have the added advantage of doubling the amount of natural light that enters the bathroom, a feature that will make it feel even more spacious.
