How to Maximize Space in a Small Kitchen Remodeling Project in Chicago

Ron Nanberg | Wed, Mar 13, 2013 | Kitchen Remodeling

If you’re going through a kitchen remodeling project, then it’s likely that one of your main goals, along with making your home more aesthetically pleasing, is to get more storage space. Storage space is an issue for just about every kitchen. Once you get what you “need,” you always find more things to store!

Here are five of our favorite suggestions that we’ve been doing on our North Shore and Chicago kitchen remodeling projects…

Remove soffits above cabinetry for more space

Remove Soffits Above Cabinets

So many kitchens have wasted space (soffits) above the cabinets. While soffits might be good for displaying a hanging plant or a large serving dish, they don’t help you much when it comes to storage.

For your next kitchen remodeling project, think about installing custom cabinets that rise all the way up to the ceiling. Items that don’t get much use can now be easily stored in these upper cabinet shelves.

Hardware Pegboard for Utensils

If you’re looking for a quirky and offbeat use of traditional items, try adding a hardware pegboard to a wall in your kitchen. Pick up a pack of S-hooks and hang some of your most commonly used kitchen utensils on the pegboard. You can free up entire drawers this way. Plus, if you hang the board near your stove and cooking spaces, you’ll have easy access to all of the tools you need.

Pullout Corner Drawers

In the last few years, many of our kitchen remodeling clients in Chicago have been jumping on board with pullout corner drawers. In the past, corners were a total – but inevitable – waste of space. These days, pullout corner drawers are opportunities for creativity in your kitchen remodel!

Hanging Kitchen Pot Racks

Speaking of opportunity, why not try a suspended kitchen pot rack? For kitchen remodeling clients who love the cookware, this is a great option to consider. Of course, the aesthetic style doesn’t work for every kitchen, but if you’re going for an industrial, rustic, or homey look, it could be a great fit!

Frameless Cabinetry v. Inset

Frameless – or European style – kitchen cabinets have become quite popular in recent kitchen remodels. Frameless cabinetry can open up space, plus give your kitchen remodel a look that you won’t see everywhere you go. We can even design custom frameless cabinetry for you, if you’d like!
