Contemporary Kitchen Remodel | Highland Park

Highland Park Kitchen Remodel

Job Summary:

These days, a modern lifestyle often includes one or both adults working out of the home. This was the case for clients who hired us for their contemporary Highland Park Kitchen Remodel. One of the homeowners is a catering chef and, while she was happy with the existing configuration, she needed more counter and food prep space.

The owners wanted to keep their existing floor, but were ready for an update everywhere else. By retaining the general footprint and flooring, they were able to spend the majority of their budget updating the kitchen's look and and creating plenty of functional work and storage space.

Cabinet Style:

We installed fully custom frameless cabinets with a Fusion door style for a new and more interesting look. Fusion doors have a softened edge, sometimes referred to as a pillowed edge. A mix of both solid and glass cabinet doors, as well as open shelving, creates a more interesting look and allows clients to display attractive glassware and cookbooks for an extra punch of color.

Cabinet Finish:

The beautiful Birdseye maple cabinets add warmth and a nice contrast to the lighter floor and countertop colors. Perimeter cabinets were finished with a natural look while the island and accent areas were stained using a Burnt Sugar finish. This is an example of how you can achieve a two-toned kitchen effect without a dramatic difference in finish or paint colors.

Counter Tops:

It's no surprise our catering chef wanted granite countertops as they are easy to work on and clean up. These are 3 cm White Sky Granite with and eased edge detail.

Backsplash:

Rather than designing an elaborate backsplash, we kept a clean and streamlined modern kitchen motif with White Glass mosaic tile in random sizes. The arrangement becomes a design all on its own.

Flooring:

Chefs need a floor that is easy to clean and sanitize on a regular basis, which is why these homeowners opted to keep their 13 x 13 porcelain tiles. Another benefit: porcelain tiles don't stain.

Other Features:

A modern Highland Park kitchen remodel wouldn't be complete without an all-purpose message center and gadget docking/charging station. We took out an extra closet near the garage entry door to create this high-tech space while keeping it apart from the main focal points. For both energy efficiency and visual appeal, our clients chose to add LED under-cabinet lighting and LED recessed lighting, which is controlled via dimmers. This kitchen allowed for a small window above the hood to add natural light, and we also included a pass through above the sink area that looks into the family room so the kitchen occupants have a clear view to the television.
