Wilmette Kitchen Design

Job Summary:

Chicago North Shore Kitchens run the gamut, from traditional and modern, neutral to colorful. This project strikes a balance with contemporary features and just the right amount of color. Our customer wanted to open up the kitchen by removing a built-in pantry. She also desired to improve traffic flow by removing the peninsula and building an island, allowing for two to three seats along the overhang.

Soffits were also removed to allow for taller cabinets, and recessed lights were added to brighten the space. The customer chose pendant light fixtures over the island to add some interest. A television mounted over the double ovens is ideal for enjoying the morning news with a cup of coffee.

Cabinetry Style:

We installed Bremtown frameless custom cabinetry in a Shaker door style with a 1/8-inch reveal in between the doors and drawers. This provides a very custom look. Shaker cabinets are ideal for transitional or contemporary kitchens. The ceiling scribe and light rail moldings keep inline with the clean, sleek appeal versus the aesthetic created by a heavy colonial crown molding. Plus this option allows more cabinetry storage since crown moulding requires more height.

Cabinet Finish:

The cherry wood cabinets were finished in Burnt Sugar.

Counter Tops:

The clients chose Tropical Green granite. The slab is 1.25-inches with a typical eased edge detail, which is also known as a square edge. The dark cabinets help to tone down the green, giving it a more mellow appearance.

Backsplash:

For the backsplash, we used marble and glass blended multi-sized mosaic. The tiles are mounted on 12x12 mesh sheets and fit together like a puzzle for easy installation. This is a good use for marble as it's highly visible but off off the countertop, protecting it from heavier-duty kitchen wear-and-tear. Annual sealing will protect it from staining or etching.

Appliances:

The clients opted to select stainless steel appliances from the GE Monogram series. The refrigerator is a 48-inch built-in. The wide commercial-style range top has a 36-inch stainless steel hood above. There are 30-inch wide full-size double ovens, a standard 12-inch wide stainless steel dishwasher and the stainless single-bowl sink is made by Franke.

Flooring:

We installed 18x18 porcelain tile that resembles limestone. It was laid in a running bond or staggered pattern.
