Deerfield Custom Built Ins

PROJECT SUMMARY:

This Deerfield homeowner wanted a built-in that would be designed around their couch and lamps. The idea was to create something unique and beyond the traditional look of individual bookshelves or end tables. Their built-in would provide a place to display fun items while simultaneously hiding home audio speakers and equipment. There is always one feature of any custom project that ties the whole thing together. In this case it is the punch of burnt red paint, an exact match to the couch rimming, that pops from the back wall and the white unit.

CABINETRY:

Our clients opted for fully custom frameless cabinetry with a door style that has a pillowed-edge detail. When you opt for painted cabinets, you can select any Benjamin Moore color from their wheel of colors and a custom cabinet line will paint it for you. In this case, the owners selected Dove White on maple. Since the doors are a slab door (or flat door) style, the core of the door is a medium density fiberboard (MDF). This is wrapped in a maple veneer. The shelves are 1-1/2-inches thick. We designed it so this custom built in was constructed with minimal components; can you figure out how the puzzle goes together? With a custom cabinet maker and installer you may never be able to figure it out.

COUNTER TOPS:

For the countertops, we used 1 1/2-inch thick maple painted to match the cabinetry in the Dove White. The edge detail is square but softened to take away the sharpness.

DOOR INSERT OPTIONS:

A built-in like this can be pretty fun. You can mix-and-match open shelving with cabinets and use door inserts for visual interest. In this case, the owners kept things relatively streamlined. At the top of the unit are four doors with a Beach Sand Beige mesh cloth as an insert so they hide the surround sound speakers for the TV. Every other door has a clear glass insert or the recesses were left as open cubbies for display purposes. All of the doors have a touch latch for operation to eliminate the need for a handle or knob, which would distract from the look of the unit.

LIGHTING:

Above the couch is a valance that hides three puck lights. These lights are a great assistance for reading or to have on at night to create a mood or add ambiance. Additional lighting is offered by the table lamps as well as the 5-inch, dimmable recessed lights in the ceiling.

Built-ins like this are ideal for living rooms, family rooms, a home theater or your master bedroom suite. Kitchens & Baths Unlimited looks forward to designing and building yours.
