The Boring Details That Matter When Remodeling Your Bathroom

Bathroom Remodel - The boring details that matterWhen it comes to your Chicago bathroom remodel, there are two kinds of selections: the fun kind and the boring or tedious kind. The fun selections are things like countertops, shower tiles, and tub or shower options. The boring selections are things like towel holders, the mechanics of the plumbing selections you choose, or task lighting fixtures.

While those boring things may not seem all that important in the big picture, they're often the largest contributors to the functionality of your bathroom space.

5 Boring Chicago Bathroom Remodeling Details That Deserve Your Attention

Here are a handful of the details we find homeowners want to rush through, or skip altogether - even though they matter quite a bit.

  1. The Materials Are Available. Amazon has tricked people into believing everything is available in just a couple of days. When it comes to kitchen and bath remodeling, that isn't always the case. Supplies are often limited and some higher-end products are practically made-to-order. If something is back-ordered, it can take weeks or even months to arrive. For that reason, we strongly advise that you make sure everything you need is available and, preferably, in possession before you begin demolition. Otherwise, you can wind up with a torn up and unusable bathroom space for quite some time.

  2. Research Function as Well as Style. Sometimes, that gorgeous shower or bath faucet winds up putting out 60 psi (ideal is more like 75+). There you are in your masterpiece but you can't even rinse the shampoo from more than five hairs at a time. Woopsie. That's a prime example of homeowners who blew through faucet and plumbing fixture selections without paying attention to water pressure and mechanical considerations that make a faucet work the way is should.

  3. Maintenance Requirements. Who wants to think about cleaning, sealing or possible maintenance issues when you haven't even installed a single tile yet? You should, that's who. Designing a kids' bathroom? Choose extra-non-slip tiles and materials that can't be as easily stained, chipped and cracked. Don't like to use the squeegee after every shower? Pay extra for shower glass with guards or shields that prevent hard water staining/etching. Low-maintenance bathroom materials are key to enjoying a bathroom remodel for years to come.

  4. Don't Skimp on Lighting. There is more to bathroom lighting than the vanity lights or that vintage chandelier you found to suspend over your relaxing soak tub. Bathrooms are similar to kitchens in that they require both task and ambient lighting, where harsh shadows or glaring light is never appreciated. You'll never regret taking time to design a thoughtful bathroom lighting plan.

  5. Customized Heights for Everything. Standard heights are the norm, but there's no extra charge for customizing specific heights/locations for shower fixtures, mirrors, cabinets/countertops, sconces, towel racks, toilet paper holders and so on. These things should be specific to your height and the way you use your bathroom.

When Kitchens & Baths Unlimited designs and builds your Chicago bathroom remodel, we facilitate all those boring details for you.
