Chicago Bathroom Remodel: Is a Walk-In Tub Right For You?

Chicago Bathroom Remodel - Walk-in TubYou’d think the kitchen would be the most dangerous room in the house – given the sharp knives and hot surfaces at work. In fact, according to AARP and the CDC, the majority of serious household accidents take place in the bathroom – and this is especially true for seniors 65-years and older. As a result, universal home designs are in high-demand and home design manufacturers are designing things like curbless showers and walk-in bathtubs to help keep homeowners safe.

Are you in the process of designing a Chicago bathroom remodel? And, are you interested in aging in place? If so, a walk-in tub might be a wise addition.

What is a Walk-In Bathtub?

A walk-in tub is a specialty bathtub, that comes equipped with a special door that opens on the side for easier – and safer – entry and exit. Without that standard, tub-height, threshold to get over, you are much less-likely to lose your balance, slip and/or fall while getting in and out of the bathtub. Walk-in tubs also come equipped with the majority of the features offered by standard or luxury soak tubs, such as jets, adjustable shower heads and in-tub seating.

Special, water-tight seals ensure water doesn’t leak out once you’re in. If you aren’t much of a bather, walk-in tubs aren’t worth it. However, if you love to bathe (or a relative who visits often loves to bathe) and you are a senior, plan to age-in-place and/or have any mobility issues, a walk-in tub is worth considering.

Points to Ponder When Considering a Walk-In Tub

Here are some of the points worth addressing as you determine whether or not a walk-in bathtub is right for you.

Do you have a little extra room in your budget?

These tubs are a niche item and require specific engineering in order to seal tight, operate reliably and quick drain (since you have to remain in the tub while it drains before you can open the door). As a result, they come with a higher price tag than their standard counterparts.

Are you okay with a less-luxurious tub aesthetic?

Because of their walk-in function, they don’t have the same, artistic, visual punch of some of the tubs out there. However, looks don’t mean much when compared with long-term safety and the ability to age independently, and in the comfort of your home. You can augment this by creating a beautiful tile tub-surround.

Do you need assistance while bathing?

Walk-in tubs are deeper than standard bathtubs. While this is great for the bather, it’s harder for a caregiver or assistant to help when needed. If you currently require assistance while bathing, we would only recommend a walk-in tub if you also include a curbless shower option. This way, you can enjoy the tub for soaking and hydrotherapy, while using the shower (equipped with a comfortable seat and hand-held showerhead) when a caregiver’s assistance is needed.
