North Shore Kitchen Renovation | Glenview

Job Summary:

This project was a new construction kitchen design in Glenview, Illinois. The owners built a warm, contemporary home with all the luxurious amenities. They entertain often so it was essential to have a large kitchen space designed for catering.

There are often two cooks in this kitchen and they frequently host large groups so they wanted enough counter and floor space for seating and entertaining. The more the merrier for this Glenview kitchen design.

Cabinetry Style:

We designed fully-custom exotic wood veneer cabinets in a flat-slab door style. The 10-foot high ceilings meant we could take the cabinets up to 102-inches, and we brought the soffit down rather than leaving an open space to collect dust. If you're a serial entertainer, those high-cabinets are excellent for serving platters and holiday-themed dishware that aren't used on a daily basis.

Cabinet Finish:

In a large kitchen design like this one, cabinets that are painted or stained alike can look a bit monotonous. For that reason, we used a two-tone approach for contrast and interest. The darker finish is a wenge wood in a natural finish. We applied it to the upper-cabinets, kitchen island and two accent cabinets along the bottom, flanking the sink. The remainder of the lower perimeter cabinets have a Brokenstraw finish on a quartered sawn oak.

Counter Tops:

These luxurious countertops are a Taupe White granite from Italy. The slab is 1.25-inches thick with an eased edge detail. We installed a radius arched overhang at the island that is 16-inches deep at its deepest point, allowing the comfortable placement of three stools off the back.

Backsplash:

For the backsplash, owners selected a 1/2x1/2 brick stone mosaic blend in multicolor tiles that blend with multiple shades represented in their granite. Stone backsplashes should be sealed for longevity and to minimize staining.

Flooring:

To keep things easy to clean and maintain, a 18x18 Porcelain tile was laid on an angle with wood base moldings.

Details:

Another way to break up a long run of cabinets is to use frosted glass cabinet inserts. Choosing frosted glass means the contents don't have to be perfect since they aren't completely visible. Appliance garages are in each corner to hide counter top appliances and keep the counters clean and uncluttered.
