North Shore Kitchen Remodeling | Lincolnshire, IL

Job Summary:

This North Shore kitchen remodel was designed for empty nesters moving into their Forever Home. They wanted to make it their own so everything from the floor to the ceiling is brand new. The monochromatic palette is subtle so we used a slightly different finish on the island for a two-toned effect.

Because it's just the two of them, comfortable raised bar seating at the island was a must. That's where the couple will enjoy their morning cups of coffee, reading and general meal taking, while the formal dining room on the other side of the stove wall is reserved for holidays and family gatherings.

Cabinetry Style:

We built frameless fully custom cabinetry using a transitional door style with an applied molding. The molding provides dimension and a slightly more traditional feel.

Cabinet Finish:

The cabinets on the perimeter are a painted Portabella with a brushstroke finish, or glaze, on top. A glaze provides a textured look to the cabinets, especially when you add molding that helps to collect the glaze.

The island is a winter stain on maple wood. The darker color contrasts with perimeter cabinets and applying stain - rather than paint - lets the maple grains show through for additional contrast.

Counter Tops:

Our clients selected 1.25-inch thick White Diamonds granite with an eased, or square, polished edge detail. The overhang on the island is approximately 15-inches to allow for three stools. It's supported by a matching wood pedestal leg underneath.

Backsplash:

Another hint of color in this kitchen comes from the 1x2 glass mosaics set in a staggered brick pattern. The mosaic tiles come come in 12x12 sheets for easier installation. Our clients chose a lighter grout for contrast and we sealed it to prevent staining and/or food absorption around the sink and kitchen areas. It's a good idea to seal grout every year, especially in high-use kitchens.

Flooring:

The main level of the home has 18x18 porcelain tiles. Porcelain tiles are durable and easy-maintenance and provide design continuity from foyer to living room, into the kitchen and beyond.

Details:

We added a few fun details worth mentioning such as wine cubbies above the microwave, pendant lights for visual accent and enhanced lighting over the island and the glass hood.
