Highland Park Laundry Room Renovation

Job Summary:

This laundry room and mudroom is definitely a high-traffic and high-use area for our client's family. From sporting equipment, shoes, winter gear, school back packs and homework - not to mention the actual laundry - it's all dropped here. This is where family and friends enter the house, and it leads right into the kitchen. The ample surface area is great for folding and sorting clothes but also doing homework and school projects while mom is cooking in the next room.

Cabinet style:

Since Highland Park residences lean towards modern designs, which entail clean lines and and overall sleek aesthetic, this homeowner went with a flat center panel cabinet door style with just a little detail on the interior edge. It is a frameless cabinet construction, which seems to be everyone’s first choice these days. Frameless cabinets offer maximum storage space as well as a sleek contemporary look with tighter door margins.

Cabinet finish:

These cabinets are a stained maple wood in a gray finish. They were done with a standard sheen so it isn't too shiny. Depending on the color, a higher-gloss finish can make certain cabinet doors look too much like plastic rather than the custom wood finish that they really are. A standard sheen is more furniture-like. Plus, in a high-traffic area, especially one that involves children, a high-gloss finish is much harder to keep clean. A furniture-grade finish will hide those smudges for longer.

Countertops:

In a laundry/mudroom like this one, you want countertops that are non-porous and durable. Café Latte quartzite is dynamite! It really makes a statement and adds to that wow factor.  Since the cabinet finish is calmer it lends the counter selection to be more interesting with movement and multiple colors.

Flooring:

The client chose porcelain 12x24 and 12x12s used in a random pattern for interest.  Porcelain is a great option for low-maintenance and high-durability since this is such a highly traveled room with wet shoes, snowy boots or a muddy dog. Porcelain tiles are easy to wipe down.

Additional features:

Kitchens aren't the only room to benefit from an island. This laundry room island allows for ample countertop surface, extra storage and room for multiple baskets to assist in the sorting of darks, whites, colors and delicates. It also has deep-drawer storage below the laundry baskets.

We also added a built-in desk area. Having a desk in the mudroom means there is no TV within viewing site. Our client liked the idea of a more distraction-free study space that is right off the kitchen so snacks and moms are still close at hand.
