Contemporary Northbrook Bathroom Design

Contemporary Northbrook Bathroom Design

Job Summary:

This master bath suite was more about updating than reconfiguring. While the bathroom configuration remained the same, everything else had to go. The previous bathroom was all white - white tile, white laminate cabinets, white walls, white sinks, etc. The effect was cold and sterile. Our clients wanted to update the entire space so it was both contemporary and warm. We achieved this by incorporating wood panels around the entire room, matching existing closet doors and mirror frames.

Cabinetry Style:

For this Northbrook bathroom remodel, we recommended fully-custom, frameless bathroom cabinets in quarter-sawn walnut. The slab or flat-door style is a wood veneer on a medium density fiberboard (MDF) core. Slab doors are preferred on a MDF core because they don't react to the environment as much as a solid walnut door would. This is especially helpful in bathroom spaces where excess moisture is a consideration. MDF is more constant and unaffected by temperature/moisture changes.

We created a recessed area under the sinks to allow space for a hand towel bar. This keeps the bar from interfering or pressing uncomfortably when you lean in to wash your hands, shave, etc.

Cabinetry Finish:

The veneer is so stunning that a natural finish was best. An advantage of veneer is the graining, which aligns from one drawer to the next since it is cut out of one sheet. This produces a nice continuous pattern.

Counter tops:

The owners selected a 3 cm Verde Bamboo granite with a square polished edge. It's a gorgeous echo of the foliage visible through the windows. The vanity is at two levels to accommodate a make-up area. We also incorporated Verde Bamboo granite around the tub and tub decking to blend the materials in the room.

Fixtures:

Kohler Ladena rectangular sinks are a nice change from standard oval under-mount sinks. The rectangular sink compliments the straight and contemporary lines in the rest of the bathroom. They are available in two sizes.

Flooring:

We took large 12x24 white porcelain plank tiles and cut them into 4-inch wide planks. These were laid in a random staggered pattern, similar to how hardwood floors are laid. The flooring has a matte finish with some texture to minimize slippage, and we used porcelain white grout.
