Job Summary:

For Northbrook, IL bathroom remodel, the clients were pleased with the size and layout of the tub space but they wanted an updated look. The original bath area was all mirrors and white laminate, which created a rather sterile and cold feel. For the update, the owners wanted to create a bathing niche that was contemporary and warm.

The Walls:

Wood is a warm, natural finish so we added Quarter Sawn Walnut wood panels, matching their custom cabinetry and window casing for continuity. The walnut is veneer and grain-aligned so the panels appear to be cut from the same piece where applicable.

Tub Deck:

The homeowners selected a 3 cm stone tub deck made of Verde Bamboo granite. We like using a granite or natural stone tub deck because it allows the tub to be undermounted, rather than resting on top. This yields a more custom, sleek and contemporary high-end feel.

Tub Splash and Tub Front:

With a tub splash, you want to protect the walls from water damage by continuing the granite up the wall. We ran the granite up to the wall panels. This created a more consistent look. We added a beautiful Forest Web mosaic on the front deck and then again in a centered panel above the wall paneling. The mosaic is colorful, interesting, and is the first thing you see when you walk in the room. Placement of the mosaic - on center of both vertical walls, rather than on all three walls - makes it a focal point and keeps the eyes from fighting where to rest. It is an example of "less is often more" when it comes to accents. Forest Web mosaic comes on 12"x12" sheets and fits together like a puzzle. It requires a professional installer to be finished correctly.

Fixtures:

The Roman tub faucet is the Siderna by Brizo in polished chrome and is accompanied by a hand shower. Hand showers make it easier to rinse off after a relaxing bath and are great for rinsing off the kids, pets, or the tub itself.

The Tub:

We installed an undermount rectangular tub, 42" x 72". It's white to match the sinks and commode.

Flooring:

We used large 12"x24" white porcelain tiles and cut them into 4"-wide planks, laying them in a random staggered pattern like a wood floor. They have a matte finish with some texture for slip resistance.
